Vision
To inspire, engage, and prepare Southeast Island School District students for success in a workforce that spans their home communities, the Southeast Alaska region, and beyond.

Mission
To prepare SISD students for workforce readiness and lifelong learning by connecting them to real-world experience with regional employers, Tribal governments and corporations, and post-secondary pathways as part of every student's K-12 experience, regardless of the size or location of their home school.

Purpose
To ensure CTE at SISD is shaped by the communities it serves students, families, employers, and Tribal partners across our island region so that career readiness reflects what opportunity actually looks like at home, not a standard imported from somewhere else.

Adapted from Advance CTE's Connected Path/ CTE Connects framework (Advance CTE was formerly the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium, NASDCTEc renamed in 2015). All six principle names below match Advance CTE's published framework exactly; the descriptions are SISD's own localization verified against careertech.org/cte-connects/principles/.

• Principle 1 — Codesigned Systems: SISD's CTE pathways are codesigned with regional employers, Tribal governments and corporations, and post-secondary partners. They are not built in isolation by the district, so every course reflects the real work available across Southeast Alaska.

• Principle 2 — Transparency & Accountability: SISD reports openly to students, families, employer partners, and Tribal partners on CTE outcomes, including enrollment, completion, and post-secondary and career results, across every site, from Thorne Bay to Port Alexander.

• Principle 3 — Integrated Experiences: CTE is not a separate track at SISD. It is woven into the academic experience at every school, including the smallest sites, so a five-student school has the same access to integrated, real-world learning as the largest.

• Principle 4 — Personalized & Flexible Pathways: Students across SISD's island communities can pursue pathways suited to their goals, including marine trades, healthcare, forestry and natural resource management, tourism, or Tribal government and corporation careers, regardless of their school's size or distance from a hub community.

• Principle 5 — Empowerment & Belonging: CTE at SISD affirms each student's connection to their home community and culture by honoring Indigenous knowledge, subsistence practices, and local ways of life as legitimate foundations for career readiness. Students are not required to set these aside to succeed.

• Principle 6 — Harnessing Technology: SISD students gain access to the technology and connectivity needed to compete for careers and further education, even at the most remote sites, while building the judgment to use emerging tools, including artificial intelligence, ethically and effectively

Timber Trail

Trades & Construction · CTSO: SkillsUSA

Construction 1- An introductory construction course, with a second-course sequence and a weekly regional follow-on class in development.

Timber Trail: Construction Services & Student-Made Goods

Modeled on the hands-on repair and build work already happening in Timber Trail's regional intensives, students will take on real construction jobs and build goods to order for the community.

Care Trail

Health Sciences · CTSO: HOSA (state affiliation pending)

An introductory health science course, taught in an intensive format, with a regional clinical rotation model planned.

Tribal Governance & Dual Credit · Lead: Superintendent Rodney Morison

Pairs SISD's required Civics course with the Close Up Washington, D.C. program. A state CTE course filing is in progress.

Teaching Trail

Education · CTSO: Educators Rising- A complete four-course sequence toward classroom aide and paraprofessional work, with dual-credit ties to the University of Alaska.

Maritime & STEM · CTSO: SkillsUSA Introduction to Engineering & Design, the shared foundation course for maritime and STEM interests across the island communities.

Spark Trail - In Development

Trades & Construction (Electrical / IBEW) · CTSO: SkillsUSA

Grade 8 career orientation through Grade 9 Construction Trades Technology, shared with Timber Trail, then Welding Technology 1 & 2 and a Grade 12 IBEW work-study placement in Klawock. Leads to OSHA-10, First Aid/CPR, and welding certification.

Venture Trail

Business & Entrepreneurship · CTSO: Business Professionals of America:

Personal finance and foundational business coursework, building toward student-led entrepreneurship.

A Paid Work-Based Learning Rotation

SISD is building a paid work-based learning program that puts students into real job sites while they're still in school. Students rotate through quarterly placements in Food Service, Health Science, Marine Careers, and Education, earning an industry credential in each one (the Alaska Food Worker Card, First Aid/CPR, OSHA-10, and Paraprofessional Certification), alongside a wage and a college tour before graduation.

Thorne Bay is the pilot site. The program grows to more communities as host partnerships are confirmed.
