Barry C. Stewart Kasaan School

Welcome to SISD's school Barry C. Stewart Kasaan Schools website!

It is currently undergoing migration, updates, adaptations and debugging so please don't hesitate to reach out with any issues you might experience so we can fix them and create a smooth, engaging and interactive experience. Staff Login and editing abilities will roll out incrementally and the creation of staff pages and department pages will be coming shortly as well as the retirement of legacy pages.

We appreciate your patience through this transition.

Principal's Message

Welcome to our school community!

Kasaan is one of only two Haida villages in Alaska, home to the Chief Son-i-Hat Whale House, known in Haida as Naay Iiwaans, the only traditional Haida longhouse still standing in the United States. The surrounding Totem Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Organized Village of Kasaan's tribal government leads its own environmental, health, and educational initiatives right here in our community. Our students grow up surrounded by that living history, not learning about it from a textbook.

As a Pre-K through 12 school with multi-age classrooms, we build on that same foundation, helping students grow together, build relationships, and develop a true sense of belonging. This year we are especially excited about new Career and Technical Education opportunities opening up across the district, including new pathways in electrical work, construction and tiny homes, HVAC, water systems, and welding, along with hands on intensives on Prince of Wales Island and new SkillsUSA and HOSA student organizations launching this year. Our Tribal Governance pathway, in particular, connects directly to the sovereignty and self-determination our community already lives every day.

We want your voice in shaping these new programs. Take five minutes to complete our POW CTE Interest Survey: https://forms.gle/gErvbAkwkaUhBtUJ8

I am honored to step into this role as your Area Principal & CTE Director, and I look forward to meeting our students, families, and staff in person this August.

Thank you for being part of our school community.

Happy Trails,

Dr. Paulisa J. Scarlett, DBA, MBA
Area Principal & CTE Director
